The Smash series has a long and infamous history of being poorly balanced, but Ultimate proved that it's not only possible to balance a Smash game but also do so arguably better than most other modern fighters. Sure, the pandemic and the game's subpar online have held tournaments back until now, but the players never left - and they seem hungrier than ever before.Įven looking at this past weekend, Genesis 8 had nearly 1,960 competitors sign up just for Smash Ultimate singles, which was higher than Genesis 7's 1,700 players back in pre-pandemic 2020 (and close to Genesis 6's 2,100 entrants when the game was still just a few months old). If anything, the competitive Smash scene is more lively than it was over 2 years ago. Maybe we'd finally get Devil May Cry's Dante and Waluigi as numbers 99 and 100.Īt around the 2-year mark, we generally start seeing interest in a fighting game drop off fairly significantly, but that's not the case with Smash Ultimate at all. There's still plenty of iconic video games out there waiting for their chance at Smash, so adding in like 5 more fighters and 1 or 2 more seasons of DLC could be big. What drums up the most interest of the masses though for something like this would be the potential for new characters too. It would of course also open the door to more balancing or mechanic tweaks to make an already strong competitive game even better, and perhaps they could add / change some mechanics to keep things feeling fresher. If Smash Ultimate Deluxe on the rumored Nintendo Switch 2 could provide an actually good online experience, that would be enough for me and many others to make the price of entry worth it. Smash Ultimate's netplay is one of the weakest offerings in fighters this past generation, yet it's more flooded with players than any other.Ī big thing that would make this game last almost indefinitely would be if Nintendo and the developers could finally figure out good rollback netcode. There's still plenty of things about the title that could be improved upon, and the biggest indicator of such is in its online play. That doesn't mean Smash Ultimate is perfect, however. The game stands as a shining achievement of video games as a whole and deserves to be celebrated as such.

We've never really seen a fighting game with the scope and scale of Smash Ultimate ever before in the genre with 86 playable characters plus 100+ stages, and the developers somehow pretty much nailed the execution too. So why are we feeling pretty adamant that Smash Ultimate should receive the Deluxe treatment before a new entry? The game did so well in fact (and people are still playing it) that the developers are making new map packs for the next 2 years despite it being almost 8 years old. We've already seen Nintendo find huge success in this avenue with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, considering its sold over 43 million copies on the Switch after pushing 8 million on the Wii U. I'm pretty sure most video game players would likely say that they'd rather see something brand new released than a re-release, but this title might be a special exemption.
